Skills

TEAM WORK

This may seem like a silly thing to call a skill, but, I love working with teams of artists to bring a vision to life that is far greater than any one of us could produce individually. Animated features are the the modern day equivalent of Cathedrals. They require the most skilled artisans pouring insane man hours, working together in unison to create thousands upon thousands of singular frames of art that when strung together tell some of our most beloved stories. To sustain this activity for years requires a LOVE of team work and a desire to serve. Whether I'm fortunate enough to be at the the head of a team or a joyful part of one, my one goal is to understand the needs of the people around me and to serve that need. Using all the creative skills at my disposal. One of my favorite sayings is " If service is beneath you, leadership is beyond you"

Production

Design

My experience in Production design for animation has been to help establish a visual language for the story being told. Firstly in service to the Director, to crystalize their vision, then developing, often in collaboration with a team of artists, a core visual philosophy for the  story being told. Ideas that give a distinct flavor to the film, all with a goal of great story telling. This step establishes the look of sets and characters. From what shapes define them, all the way down to how we are going to treat the stitches on their clothing. Production design is where "the visual rules" of a film are established. As well as the roadmap drawn for all teams to follow.

Art DIRECTion

My experience in Art Direction has been to take the vision established in Production Design (mine or another's) and to work closely with all animation departments further down the pipeline. Firstly by providing clear briefs that inspire and share the vision of the directors with each team. Then using the approved art as a guide working with each team. Reviewing work, providing clear draw-overs with measurable outcomes, feedback that is clear enough to allow them to move with confidence. I believe in clear communication that avoids frustration through misinterpretation.

CONCEPT ART

"Concept art is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in filmsvideo gamesanimationcomic books, or other media before it is put into the final product." It is the workhorse of artforms as it's art that is designed to communicate to team members across the film production what the desired look for characters and sets is. Through years of experience working within animation I have honed the skill of creating art that serves the needs of others.
